Making the Most of Quarantine Life during COVID-19

To give you all an update, we were unable to do our Clothed in Dignity & Strength fundraiser.  Now the fundraiser has been put on further hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic.  This virus has both caused many heartbreak due to the loss of friends and loved ones, but it has also united us all near and far as we help to stop the spread of COVID.

During the almost two months that I have been quarantined I have tried to be as productive as possible.  Although I work from home Monday through Fridays I have also tried to make the most of my time at home in the following ways:

1.  Spend Time with Family
I decided to quarantine with my family.  It served as a support system for us, where I can help my parents out and we can spend quality time together.  We have watched movies together, had family dinner at the table (with no phones!), enjoyed ice cream together and other snacks while watching 90s sitcoms like Martin, the Fresh Prince of BelAir, and Living Single.  Other fun things to do are to play board games or other games.  Find something that the whole family would love, such as Twister, Sorry, Trouble, Monopoly, etc.  My father and I love to play dominoes together and its a great game for four to play!

2.  Get Creative in the Kitchen
Cooking can sometimes be a hassle especially when working from home and tending to the family.  It can be even more cumbersome for parents with smaller kids.  Plan creative meals and allow your kids to join the fun.  Baking is a fun activity for the kids to get involved in.  Even if you don't have kids of your own you can get creative by trying out different recipes and sharpening those cooking skills.  I have challenged my family to eat healthier so I enjoy thinking of creative ways to introduce different vegetables to our meals.  I have also even stepped out of my comfort zone and made different meals that I've enjoyed at restaurants but never made at home.  It was a challenge and a yummy reward!

3.  Pick Up an Old Hobby
Most people have had a hobby at one point in their lives that they have neglected or just have no time to do anymore.  I enjoy things like reading (leisure reading not work related material), crocheting, knitting, coloring, and playing or singing music.  I have looked for creative ways to reincorporate these thing into my life.  I read before bed, even if it is only for a half hour.  I listen to music while I am cooking.  I have bought some color by number books (get off your phone the actual coloring is better than the app!) for some down time, and I even crocheted a headband/ear warmer for next winter.  What is your favorite hobby? Find a new way to get back to that something that you used to love.

4.  Pick Up a New Hobby
Maybe you are one of those people who never had a hobby but wished you had the time to do something new just for fun.  This time is as a great a time as any to do so.  We live in a world where we can learn to do almost anything on YouTube with DIY tutorials, self-help books, or even just asking a friend.  I chose to dedicate myself to self-care, such as doing my hair and nails.  I invested in a SNS dipping powder kit and I have been able to learn how to do my nails and save money on costly spa days at the nail salon.  I'm also embarking on a natural hair journey to help revamp my naturally curly hair that has gone dry and limp (I will be blogging about that soon).  Guys, maybe all of that is too girly for you but now is as good a time as any to learn to build something, or to create an app, or to grow and maintain a beard, or to even cut your own hair or your kids' hair (I bought a pair of Aris clippers on Walmart.com for $59.95).  My favorite hobby that I picked up was learning a new language.   I downloaded Duolingo and began learning French.  I have been doing it for 40 days and I love it!

5.  Relax and Practice Self-Care
Everyone needs some TLC and to invest in some alone time and self-care time.  Be intentional.  Unplug from your phone and social media, even if its for 15 mins a day.  Set out the time to do things that you enjoy and that will help you unwind.  If you like to meditate and pray, wake up a little earlier to do so.  If you like to sit in the bubble bath with the candles lit and a glass of wine or a book in hand, plan some time before bed (when the kids are asleep!) and dedicate some time to yourself.  You owe it to yourself to feel better, look better, and sleep better.  Take some much needed time for you and unwind! Taking care of your mind, body and soul will empower you to take care of others.

Essentially, there is no right or wrong way to quarantine.  These are the things I have done to pass the time and to help be mindful and make the most of my time indoors.  I dedicated myself to my family as well as to bettering myself all around.  I chose things that I believed would be fun, would benefit me in some way, and would allow me to feel better about myself.

The fact of the matter is these are trying times, and we should help each other stay sane, safe and healthy.  It is fine to just use this time to rest.  Whatever it is that benefits you. What have you done during quarantine? Please comment your ideas, comments and suggestions below!
